Experiment 1 Feedback
The intention of publishing the feedback below is so that all students can benefit by understanding the strengths and weakness’ of a range of projects. Please take the time to review other students work with these comments in mind. If you have any questions or would like any further clarification don’t hesitate to ask me during the studio session.

Albert Cordero

Key strength of the scheme:

Your work shows genuine potential, however that requires many more hours spent on the coursework.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Not enough time spent on the hand drawn sections and textures.

No second draft model.

Very little in your blog to describe the underground component of the scheme.

Nothing unique or individual about the stair.

Alice Furber

Key strength of the scheme:

Roughly drawn but inventive cross sections which formed a good base for your explorative work. Your final section shows real care and is very evocative. Good drawn process analysis.

Your aboveground studio and stair resolved beautifully.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Moleskin should be scanned more carefully

Underground entity is not fully resolved

Anna Paton

Key strength of the scheme:

Great ideas expressed in the drawn sections successfully carried through to the model. The design is very good but could have been taken further with a stronger sense of earth and its characteristics – mass, texture, moisture, its surface, etc.

Concepts of the sections are excellent, but could be slightly improved with more careful penmanship and greater variety of cross hatching techniques. Perhaps more thought re earth cross hatching would have encouraged a greater sense of earth in the final model…?

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

No second draft model posted on your blog.

Anthony Ho

Key strength of the scheme:

Fantastic computer work, and good extensive design analysis and execution.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Your design work relies just a touch on reconfiguring conventional forms, rather than original form making attributable simply to the clients, words and sections.

Hand drawn work does not reach the same standard as your design or computer work – perhaps spend more time on them.

Antonio Serra-Martins

Key strength of the scheme:

Well drawn sections, some with particularly good concepts. Good analysis with both draft models, nice to see both treated with the respect they deserved, and demonstrates an understanding of the type of rigour required in a successful design process.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Animations do not run smoothly and not nearly up to the same standard as your other work.

Your resolved design is excellent, but falls slightly with some detailing, particularly with the stair (could do with just a little more componentry), and the mass of the pyramid at the base – it feels too light.

Ashleigh Ng

Key strength of the scheme:

Good original ideas thoroughly enriched with exceptional design development. Perhaps at the end however, the resolution of the sphere falls short with its intersection with the ground (it should be floating just above it) with a conventional paper thin floor inside.

THOROUGHLY enjoyable animations.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Not all custom textures are shown on your blog, however very well applied to your model.

Billy Tran

Key strength of the scheme:

Some good (and speedy) resolution, particularly with the underground studio.

Starting the project earlier on will result in far more success

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Far more care required with the hand drawn components of the course.

NO sense of underground

Dmitri Iassenev

Key strength of the scheme:

Excellent integration between site and architecture. Also good the way the journey on the stair follows similar oscillations to those of the surrounding landform.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Poorly drawn sections and textures which do not do justice to some very good ideas.

James Rickard-Bell

Key strength of the scheme:

The design has come a long way since your first modelling, but remains still somewhat extruded from the original 2D sketch section.

Nice resolution coordinating exterior and interior forms, particularly noted with your ceiling profiles.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Although you should be commended on the amount of work you have done, your scheme has ended up a little too busy. Some design restraint is required

Some interesting ideas expressed in the sections, but drawn too quickly and rough

Second draft scheme (if that’s what it is…) is weak

Jeffrey Wu

Key strength of the scheme:

Diligent design development that has resulted in a unique scheme very true to your original observations, analysis and artworks. The custom textures, like the sections, are quite roughly drawn, however beautifully applied to the model especially with your use of colour.

Impressive form making skills are demonstrated, as well as interpretation of the site in relation to Hall’s art work.

Beautiful layering of spaces in the “underwater” studio

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

No 2nd draft model posted on your blog

Good explorative work in the sections, although too roughly drawn.

Joanna Chen

Key strength of the scheme:

A very nice scheme resulting from good creative analysis and a lot of hard work testing your ideas.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

No textures posted on your blog!! (I see them just on your model)

Your model needs to be refined and tightened – ie. Only keep the components and spaces that are doing something, remove the rest.

Jun Youlyee

Key strength of the scheme:

Good ideas and nice hand drawn work, although it seems you ended up developing the most banal of your sections without really doing any of them justice.

Good hatching and detailing, but generally an undeveloped scheme, especially aboveground.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Underground space is far more intricate and developed than the aboveground studio.

Kelvin Lau

Key strength of the scheme:

Diligent and tireless development of ideas resulting in an exceptional scheme. Excellent pursuit of computer skill development.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Good drawings, but not quite fine enough to convey the extent or depth of your ideas. More time spent on them would be required.

Liyi Zhang

Key strength of the scheme:

Textures edited and applied cleverly and appropriately to model components.

Good development of a simple idea resolved to quite a wonderful and intricate series of spaces.

Animation 3 is exceptional.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

No genuine sense of earth surrounding underground spaces.

Not very satisfying arrival points for each stair at the ground datum

Matthew Brown

Key strength of the scheme:

Excellent use of artworks in spaces. Strong computer skills demonstrated creatively. Excellent evolution of ideas. Intriguing spaces

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Handwork a little bit rough

Mike Xia

Key strength of the scheme:

Some fantastic ideas portrayed in your sketch sections, but appallingly presented in blue biro and poor photo-capturing techniques

The work actually done in developing the design concept is quite good, but nowhere near extensive enough to reach a satisfactory resolution.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Numbers fall short in all Submission Requirements, plus ‘but’ comments above.

Mitchell Stevens

Key strength of the scheme:

Some interesting ideas, and good computer skills demonstrated, but not reaching a satisfying level of resolution. To attain the grades I think that you are capable of will require about 3x as much work.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Your custom textures are not bad, but let down with poor scanning.

Philippa Marston

Key strength of the scheme:

Exceptional and patient technique in development of ideas - great analysis.

Well resolved scheme with probably a few more elements than required to rationalise the original idea expressed in your words and drawings.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

Fantastic ideas expressed in your sections, although a little roughly drawn.

Well done, but poorly scanned textures. Those textures I’m estimating took hours to draw, it is worth spending an extra 2 minutes to make sure your Moleskin is straight on the scanner before scanning them.

Wei Lui

Key strength of the scheme:

Some very good ideas expressed in the sections and model, but needs far more work to develop the ideas.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

One of the main points of the exercise was missed, being – give 3 words for each artwork, and draw sections depicting all 9 words

Design appears unresolved because not all of it is shown on your blog. There is only one draft model on your blog.

Textures are poorly drawn but well applied to model.

Ya-Feng Zhu

Key strength of the scheme:

Inventive use of colour combining with the custom texture.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

The interpretation of Gascoigne’s artwork as “ornament” has been taken too literally with conventional iconography used too extensively rather than referencing the artwork itself or its meaning.

Space belowground unresolved with no sense of surrounding earth.

Yunis Asaad

Key strength of the scheme:

Good use of colour, shadow and materiality.

Most significant weakness of the scheme:

No ground plane in the animations. Many rooms in the above-ground token and unusable. Most images on the blog do not enlarge.
